Japanese Coming of Age Ceremony

There is a national holiday, coming of age day in Japan. It's the second monday of January. We cerebrate people who became or will become 20 years old. They have coming of age ceremony on that day. They make sure to be responsible for what they do and stand by themselves through the ceremony.
The ceremony is held in each city. Most people go back to each hometown and attend the ceremony. They gather in ceremony venues wearing Japanese formal wear, Kimono (Furisode, Montsuki-haori-hakama.) Then they listen to mayer's congraturations. They become glad to have reunion with friends of their school days.

In April 2022, the age of adulthood was lowered to 18 from 20. But local governments will keep the ceremony for people aged 20. Because it causes confusion if local governments decide that people 18 aged can attend the ceremony . They prepare for university examinations or employment in January so they have no room in their mind. In addittion, it will be difficult to decide venue in the first year because people aged 18, 19, 20 will attend the ceremony.

I think you have seen many women wear fur stoles like this in the ceremony. This is because January is very cold in Japan.

This ceremony's origin was one city. In 1946, most Japanese was loosing hope because it was after World War Ⅱ. Everyone lost many things. Because of this, one youth group thought to encourage the next generation of young people who would reconstruct Japan. They planned an event, youth festival. In this festival, original coming of age ceremony was held. A mayer and some guests encouraged them and young people were deeply moved their hearts. They had a wonderful time and became positive. Therefore all over Japan thought highly of the event  and everyone came to be interested in it. For this reason, Japan decided coming of age day as a national holiday in 1948.

Actually, I didn't know about the history until I write this blog. It was just an event that I could wear gogeous Kimono for me aged 20. I will remember that on every coming of age day.
