Tatami Mat
This picture is "Washitsu: 和室." Washitsu is a room that has "Shoji*: 障子", "Fusuma**: 襖" and tatami mats and so on. I introduce you to tatami mats this time.
Please look at third picture.
Japanese traditional houses have tatami mat room. Tatami mats are made of rushes. We ask tatami makers for maintenance as follows.
<After 2 to 5 years from the time we bought tatami mats>
"Tatamiberi: 畳縁" is taken off and tatami mat's surface is reversed. This
work is called "Uragaeshi: 裏返し." Tatami mat's surface is called
"Tatamiomote: 畳表."
<After about 5 years from
"Uragaeshi">
"Tatamiberi" is taken
off again, and "Tatamiomote" is changed new one. This work is called
"Omotegae:表替え."
We can
use tatami mats for about 10 to 15 years in total. Most families have
tatami mat rooms until about 40 years ago. Now, some families have it, others
don't have. Tatami mat rooms decreases from about 30 years ago because it
costs more maintenance fee than wood flooring rooms. But I like tatami mat
rooms. We feel cool in summer and warm in winter. New tatami mats smell
like forest. Tatami's cushioning is confortable for our body. When I was a
child, I used to take a nap on tatami mats in good season, spring or fall.
There was a nice breeze coming through the window. It is good memory.
If you want to spend in tatami mat rooms, you should go to "Ryokan: 旅館." Ryokan is Japanese style hotels. You can find them easily in hot spring town. When you stay at a Japanese style hotel, you may find a small space. It is called "Tokonoma: 床の間." Tokonoma is a space decorated something like "Kakejiku: 掛軸" or "Ikebana: 生け花." Kakejiku is Japanese paintings. Ikebana is a flower arrangement. When you come to Japan, if you stay at a Japanese style hotel, please watch them!
